Insider Tip

For a hygge—a near-untranslatable Danish word that partly means English cosiness—experience, contact Dine with the Danes for a home-cooked dinner with a local family (Tel. 2685 3961. www.dinewiththedanes.dk).

Key Area

The area around Elmegade, near the Jewish Cemetery, has a Parisian feel to it. It’s full of small, trendy designer boutiques, quirky little antiques shops, laid-back cafés and cool cocktail bars.

This month

The annual Crazy Christmas Cabaret (in English) premières at the Glass Theatre in Tivoli Gardens. This year, Hamlet's Private Dick is a Sherlock Holmes adventure, where the famous detective is hired to solve the mystery of Hamlet’s father’s death (6 November 2008-10 January 2009. www.londontoast.dk).

Day Tripping

Roskilde – Just a 20-minute journey from Copenhagen is Roskilde—Denmark’s first capital city, dating back to medieval times. The cathedral, where many kings and queens are buried, is well worth a visit. Check out the clock showing the famous scene of St George slaying a dragon—every hour he makes the dragon cry.

No way!

Everybody knows Hamlet was a Danish prince. But in the old legend—recorded in the 13th century by historian Saxo Grammaticus and used as inspiration for Shakespeare's famous play—the prince was called Amled.
