Bon Appetit

Up to €15

Au Gourmand
( 10 Dlouha, Prague 1. Tel. 222 329 060 )
Flaky croissants, pillow-like cakes and perfect sandwiches. A perfect Old Town stop for an afternoon nibble or caffeine jolt.

Up to €30

Restaurant Bellevue
( 18 Smetanovo Nabrezi, Prague 1. Tel. 222 221 443 )
Though any meal is divine at this spot that boasts one of the best views of Prague Castle, try to make it here for Sunday brunch, when Champagne, suckling pork chops, fresh cheesecake and live jazz music make it easy to forget that Monday is just hours away.

Up to €50

Ristorante Amici Miei
( 5 Vizenska, Prague 1. Tel. 224 816 688 )
A warm Italian restaurant in Prague's Old Town. Expect perfection with dishes like monkfish wrapped in Parma ham-crust and fresh strawberries.

Exclusive

Svata Klara
( 35 U Trojskeho Zamku, Prague 7. Tel. 233 540 173 )
Originally a wine cellar for nearby Troja Castle, this subterranean restaurant is one of the most romantic spots in Prague. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie dined here last year.

Night Fever

Low Key

St Nicholas Café
( 10 Trziste, Prague 1. Tel. 257 530 204 )
A bar near Prague Castle that is so comfortable and unpretentious that you might just surrender your entire evening to one venue.

Live Music

Rock Café
( 20 Narodni, Prague 1. Tel. 224 933 947 )
From rockabilly to goth, anything goes at this central club.

Late & Lively

Dias y Noches
( 9 Masna, Prague 1. Tel. 222 316 133 )
It's a balancing act at this spot that is a café by day and cocktail bar by night. Open until 3am.

Shop

Ready to seek out mid- to high-end second-hand finds? Head to Backstage, neighbouring Old Town Square, which stocks fashions for men and women (8 Tynska, Prague 1).

Insider Tip

Those with a sweet tooth will most likely be disappointed with Czech sweets. That said, a French couple in the Vinohrady neighbourhood have some sinful cakes and chocolates to tempt you at Passion Chocolat (5 Italska, Prague 2).

Key Area

Head to Jiřího z Poděbrad and take a walk down Antique Lane on Manesova, a street dotted with several antiques shops that are quiet, dusty and inspiring on weekdays.

This month

Relax with some of the finest tunes during the International Jazz Festival in various venues around the city (22-30 November. Tel. 222 897 333. www.jazzfestivalpraha.cz).

Day Tripping

Liberec – Those who aren't quite ready for the cold winter days should head to the Liberec Centrum Babylon indoor water park, complete with a bar, sauna and water slides. Take the yellow line metro from Prague to Černý Most, then the bus to Liberec.

No way!

In 1841 the sugar cube was invented by Jakub Kryštof Rad in the Czech Republic.
