Insider Tip

In the centre of town, next to the Sound and Light Garden and behind the central taxi station, the information office of the municipality of Rhodes provides info and sells tickets for upcoming events.

Key Area

Ialysos Beach and the boulevard next to it offers plenty of affordable restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, making it tough to choose where to have lunch.

This month

Autumn of Art is a series of four art exhibitions with works of both famous Greek artists and new talents (until 30 November. Kozas Gallery, 13 Ammohostou Street. www.kozas.gr).

Day Tripping

Profitis Ilias Mountain – Covered by a pine-tree forest the Profitis Ilias Mountain is an ideal day trip. Its top, where you'll find the Elafos Hotel, is about 50 minutes from Rhodes and serves as a perfect escape with a unique view. Small Byzantine churches and fountains are dotted along your way up the mountain.

No way!

The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is mistakenly placed at the entrance of the current Mandraki Harbour. The statue was probably sited at the Temple of Helios (Sun), where the Palace of the Grand Magister stands today.
