Bon Appetit

Up to €15

Quatre Saisons
( Rue Ibn Nosaid, across from Hotel Tanjah. Tel. 063 138 370 )
Baissara (split pea soup) is the speciality here—and the best in town. Made with plenty of garlic in a bubbling pot, it's a hearty warmer for damp days.

Up to €30

Luigi’s Pizza
( Place du Koweït. Tel. 039 379 006 )
Good for family-style dining, the calzones or pizzas are of good quality, while the pasta plates are generous.

Up to €50

Anna et Paolo
( 14 Avenue de Lafayette. Tel. 039 944 617 )
This quaint, family-run restaurant is popular with the cognoscenti for its strict adherence to the Italian tradition, as well as its large (for these parts) selection of wines and amiable hosts.

Exclusive

El Erz
( Hotel El Minzah, 85 Rue de la Liberté. Tel. 039 333 311 )
Served in an opulent dining room with marble arches and leather chairs, the international cuisine—such as pepper steak or fresh sole—is tip top.

Night Fever

Low Key

Atlas Bar
( 30 Rue Prince Heritier. Tel. 039 932 512 )
This cute establishment with curious paintings and an island bar serves generous tapas with your drink. Spéciale, the local brew beer, is a must.

Live Music

Borsalino
( 30 Avenue du Prince de Moulay Abdellah. )
A live singer and band play oriental pop tunes and cover Egyptian crooners, while customers (mostly men) lounge on white leather couches under a glowing disco ball.

Late & Lively

VIP’s Club
( Hôtel Intercontinental, Parc Brooks. Tel. 039 936 053 )
This exclusive, underground club is nothing special when it comes to music, but does have a lavish interior. It caters to a professional crowd.

Shop

Galerie Laure Wefling offers fusion styles grandiose enough to be worn by dukes and sultans. The shop is eye-candy as much as anything (3 Place de la Kasbah. Tel. 039 932 083).

Insider Tip

If you’re staying in the medina, you may want to buy some alcohol to drink at home. Try Casa Pepe on the boulevard for a wall stocked with all your needs (9 Rue Ibn Rochd. Tel. 039 937 039).

Key Area

Plaza Toro, named after the old bullfighting arena still standing in beautiful dilapidation, is the confluence of many roads, the location of the bus station and architecturally notable Syrian Mosque.

This month

Tanja Latina brings international Latin stars to flambé Tangier's dance floors with salsa, merengue, mambo and samba, from 9.30pm and midnight, at the Mövenpick and Rif hotels. Tito Puente's orchestra is also scheduled to play (5-9 November).

Day Tripping

Moulay Boussalem – This bird-watcher’s paradise south of Tangier is a favourite of pink flamingos on their way to points south. Guides with small skiffs and binoculars wait on site.

No way!

Tangier is getting set to accommodate five million tourists by 2016—that means getting 23,000 new beds ready!
