  • Stocking a huge range of quirky and unusual gifts, toys and cards, Nova should be your first point of call if you're looking for that special something (18-24 Chapel Street. www.novagifts.co.uk).
  • Boats from far and wide come to the tiny fishing village of Portsoy to take part in the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival - a celebration of seafaring traditions. There's great music, fine foods and family fun, too (2-5 July. stbf.bizland.com).
  • Even if you don't fancy a dip in the sea, Aberdeen's impressive Beach Esplanade is worth a visit and easily reached from the city centre. Lining the seafront are a variety of cafés and amusements.
  • Get away from it all to the Glen Tanar Estate, in beautiful Royal Deeside, offering superb scenery, outdoor activities and self-catering cottages (Aboyne. www.glentanar.co.uk).
