  • The Word (on the main Baza road, in Albox, two doors from the Beer Emporium) is one of the best English bookshops in the province. As well as a large range of novels, it also sells tickets to local events.
  • The San Javier jazz festival is in full swing this month, with a number of eye-catching acts. See www.jazz.sanjavier.es for the full listing (until 25 July).
  • Puerta de Purchena - the busy square at the centre of the city - is the best place to start a tour of Almería. Take any of the narrow streets off the plaza that head down to the port to find wonderful tapas bars, small boutiques, historic buildings and museums.
  • Agua Amarga is a classic whitewashed village in the Cabo de Gata park. About half an hour's drive away, it has a beautiful beach that looks out onto a picturesque bay that's a good spot for a swim. There are a couple of seafront bars where you can top up on tapas and a beer. The coastal path winds around the mountainous shoreline offering unrivalled views, with first stop the stunning Cala de Enmedio.

  • In Almería's desert at Tabernas, about 40 kilometres from the city, is Mini-Hollywood, the set for numerous spaghetti westerns including Sergio Leone's classic A Fistful of Dollars.
