This month...

  • Squeeze into Bijou Brigitte, an always busy but welcoming store where you can find colourful trendy jewellery made from natural stones for less than €10. Just the thing for summer gifts (14 Palacio Valdes, Oviedo).
  • The must-visit event this month is Gijón's Semana Negra (Black Week) festival. Its origins are literary but besides a book fair there's non-stop fun with street entertainment and refreshments for all ages (10-19 July. Campos Viesques).
  • Avilés's picturesque main square, the Plaza de España, home to the Town Hall, is everyone's favourite place to meet before heading to one of the cafés, eateries or lively bars on the nearby cobbled and colonnaded Rivero and Galiana streets.
  • Head west of Gijón and relax on the beautiful Playa de Aguilar beach, near Muros de Nalón. For those prepared to go the extra mile, there's a walk with spectacular views starting from the car park end and the Azpiazu bar/restaurant serves drinks and hot tapas.

Tips

  • Tourism was recently given a boost in the Proaza/Quiros area as brown bear lovers descended to support much-loved local female bears Paca and Torla in their attempts to maintain the species' longevity. A male suitor from a neighbouring region was brought in for the purpose and, after a two-week courtship, apparently accomplished his mission.
