This month...

  • Oriol Balaguer lifts the art of chocolate-making to a another echelon. See why he is called the Christian Lacroix of sweets at his bijoux flagship store (2 Plaça Sant Gregori Taumaturg. www.oriolbalaguer.com).
  • Barcelona's biggest cultural bash, La Grec, starts this month. Expect big names in music, dance and theatre - or head to the open-air cinema at the Castell de Montjuïc (www.barcelonafestival.com, Spanish only).
  • To escape the big crowds along the more popular city beaches, head to the Fórum complex and laze around the Banys del Mar seaside promenade and bathing facility.
  • Head inland - with the coasts packed out, towns such as Terrassa, with its wealth of modernista architecture, seem like ghost towns in comparison. Trains run every half hour from Barcelona Sants and the journey takes 45 minutes.

Tips

  • In 2007, Castelldefels, just north of Barcelona, became the first beach in Spain to offer free WiFi access. There are no waves, but plenty of 'surfers' along its sandy shores. Just watch your laptop when you go for a swim.
