  • Though Basel isn't known for its wines, it sits between the vineyards of France, Germany and those further south in Italy. The stunning Paul Ullrich wine shop has a great selection of these fine wines from near and far (27 Schneidergasse).
  • While the Basel Kunstmuseum is refitted for the not-to-be-missed Van Gogh exhibit, top pieces from the museum's collection are on display at as-weird-as-it-gets Schaulager, a building that serves as a contemporary art storage facility. It's just a few stops away on tram 11 (19 Ruchfeldstrasse).
  • The tiny Hamlet of Murbach, west of Colmar, offers great walks as well as the stunning medieval Murbach Abbey.
  • Straddling the River Rhine, Stein am Rhein is one of Switzerland's best-preserved medieval towns. Less than two hours from Basel by car or train, don't miss a stop at the nearby Rhine Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls Europe, where the waters of the great river fall 23 metres.

Tips

  • Rhine swimming has become a Basel passion since water quality has improved, despite giant barges struggling upstream, fast currents, and bridge pilings, whose swirling currents, legend has it, swallow swimmers. If you stay near the shore, inside the blue markers, strong swimmers should have nothing to worry about - except the thousands of onlookers watching from the bank.
