This month...

  • Head over to Capucins Market early in the morning (it is open daily until lunchtime, except Monday). Particularly good for oysters and fresh fruit and vegetables, there are cafés around the outside.
  • Bastille Day is celebrated in grand style in Bordeaux, with music and fireworks along the banks of the Garonne. For details, contact the tourist office (14 July. 12 Cours XXX Juillet. www.bordeaux-tourisme.com).
  • The fully finished quays are ready to be explored either on foot, by bike, rollerblade or skateboard. Right at the far end, towards the train station, there is now a half-tennis court, beach volleyball court, children's play area, large expanses of green lawns and a boardwalk along the river.
  • In July, do what the Bordelaise do and head to the Atlantic Coast. Their favourite haunts are Cap Ferret and Arcachon, but just a little further south is Pylat. This is the highest sand dune in Europe, standing at more than 100 metres high - on a sunny day, the view from the top is white sand, blue sky and blue sea. To get there, go by car on the A62 motorway, or by train to Arcachon.

Tips

  • Several times a year, particularly from June to September, the Mascaret wave can be seen travelling down the Gironde and Dordogne rivers, often reaching up to 1.5 metres tall. Some people even surf on it.
