  • Stay away from the malls - you will find prices are often higher than at home - and head for small stores such as Kombinat, full of local fashion and art in a converted communist-era canteen (22 Strada Tudor Arghezi).
  • Even locals seem unaware that Bucharest has a fantastic Botanical Garden, with thousands of of plant varieties spread over a gorgeous 17-hectare site. Don't miss it (32 Sos Cotroceni. www.gradina-botanica.ro).
  • Get wet! Bucharest is home to a number of outdoor lidos, called 'strand'. The best are Club Daimon, in Parcul Tineretului (www.daimonclub.ro), and the Water Park by the airport (225A Calea Bucurestilor. www.waterpark.ro).
  • The beach is too far away for a day trip, so head to the mountains. Sinaia, with its cooling breezes, historic monastery, fairytale castle and cable car that will take up to 2,000 metres, is just two hours away by InterCity train.

Tips

top
  • Bucharest slopes gently from north to south, from 89 metres above sea level at Piata Presei Libere to 54 metres at Popesti Leordeni.
