Airport Information

  • The fare to Cologne is about €30; and Bonn €40.

  • Trains to Cologne leave every 10 minutes. Tickets: single €2.50. To Bonn catch the bus every 20-30 mins. Tickets: single €4.20

  • Between Rudolfplatz and Ehrenstrasse you'll find Variante, a stylish shop selling furniture and all kinds of homewares. You won't be able to resist (38-40 Pfeilstrasse).
  • Kölner Lichter is Cologne's most spectacular annual fireworks display. This year, the fireworks are being launched on the other side of the river, so the best viewing positions are in the Altstadt (11 July. www.koelner-lichter.de).
  • Pay a visit to Poppelsdorfer Schloss and take in the wonderful architecture and lovely park (Poppelsdorfer Schloss, 171 Meckenheimer Allee, Bonn. www.uni-bonn.de).
  • Only an hour's drive from Cologne, Maastricht, in the Netherlands, is a popular destination for Germans - especially as the shops open on Sunday. Full of winding streets, great shops, and inviting little cafés and restaurants.

Tips

  • Just across the river from Bonn are the majestic Siebengebirge Hills and Drachenfels Mountain. According to legend, a dragon once lived at the top. It can still be seen today, safely locked up inside a glass box.
