This month...

top
  • Shop at Corfu New Life Art Gallery for paintings and prints, mostly of local scenes. Pick-and-mix a collection of semi-precious stones and fossils from the big selection on show (High Street, Kassiopi).
  • See the island's biggest fiesta near Velonades, north-west Corfu. Bands play traditional music while locals dance, scoff roast lamb and browse the market stalls (20 July).
  • Go to Old Sinies, a spooky ruined village above Nissaki, just under the Pantokrator summit. You'll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle as the road is rough.
  • Escape to the Agia Varvara Headland, between Agios Stefanos and Avlaki. It's completely undeveloped, traffic-free and criss-crossed with bridleways. Watch out for horses!

Tips

top
  • Albania is less than two kilometres from Corfu's North East Coast. Under communist rule, escapees would swim over on inflated inner-tyres.
