  • Head to up-market Quinta Shopping if you want to impress on the beach or out on the town: 60 stores packed with designer fashion, beachwear and jewellery (Quinta do Lago. Tel. 289 392 355).
  • Jazz legends Chick Corea and Gary Burton, plus British diva Joss Stone, will be among the performers at the Allgarve festival, taking place across the region in July (www.allgarve.pt).
  • Avoid the crowds. The smaller resorts west of Lagos such as Praia da Luz, Salema and Burgau have great beaches and a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Go before the Portuguese descend en masse in August.
  • For guaranteed peace and quiet, and a chance to work on the all-over tan, there are superb naturist beaches further west, including Furnas, Zavial and Barranco.

Tips

  • The Japanese dish tempura is of Portuguese origin. Missionaries would deep-fry vegetables during Lent as they weren't allowed meat. The Latin ad tempora quadragesimae means 'during Lent'.
