  • See the largest display of art in the city at the Glasgow Arts Centre, which has works by more than 20 artists, including the largest number of original paintings by Peter Howson under one roof (7 Trongate, Glasgow Cross, Merchant City).
  • Glasgow Festival on the Clyde is a popular event offering two days of free family fun in and around the SECC, Glasgow Science Centre and the Tall Ship Glenlee (25-26 July. www.theglasgowfestival.com).
  • Alloway, near Ayr, is where Scotland's national poet Robert Burns was born. Visit the Burns National Heritage Park, Burns Cottage and Museum, the ruins of Alloway Kirk and the famous Brig o' Doon. Ayr itself is a lovely seaside town on the coast. Get there by train from Glasgow Central.
  • Take a trip 'doon the water' on the Waverley, the world's last oceangoing paddle steamer, from Glasgow Science Centre (0845 130 4647. www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk).
