The uninterrupted Bosphorus views are standard, but nothing about the menu is: octopus casserole, sea bream with saffron, sea bass with chard, sole with capers and almonds and salads laced with nettles, endives, radishes and mustard greens, and drenched with sour pomegranate syrup. Decidedly untraditional.

  • Avantgardeast is a vintage clothing store turned offbeat fashion marque. If you can't find it here, they probably haven't made it yet (Galatasaray Is Han, Istiklal Caddesi, Beyoğlu).
  • The 16th Istanbul International Jazz Festival has concerts at venues all over the city. Highlights this year include Marcus Miller, George Benson, Joe Jackson and Joe Sample with Randy Crawford (2-15 July).
  • Located just outside the city walls on Silivrikapi Balikli Caddesi, the Shrine of Zoodochus Pege is a much rebuilt Byzantine church, housing a pre-Christian sacred spring, complete with 'sacred' fish.
  • Büyükada - the largest of the Princes Isles - boasts beaches, churches, monasteries and sumptuous fin-de-siecle wooden mansions, including one that was home to Trotsky for two years. See www.ido.com.tr for a ferry timetable.
