This month...

  • ShoeShine by Charlotte offers the latest in glamorous footwear, clothes and accessories and is especially popular with young islanders (30 Avenida de las Playas, Puerto del Carmen. Tel. 928 514 988).
  • The patron saint of fishermen, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, is honoured in many seaside villages from mid-July. The processions follow the statue of the virgin from the local church to the water's edge, to accompany the priest for the blessing of the boats.
  • Puerto Calero, just a few minutes' drive from bustling Puerto del Carmen, is a lovely marina that offers a refined setting to enjoy a meal or quiet cocktail by the water's edge.
  • Take the ferry to neighbouring Fuerteventura to sample the best beaches in the Canary Islands. The ferry sails from Playa Blanca to Corralejo, from where it is just a short taxi ride to the enormous sand dunes.

Tips

top
  • Lanzarote's normally arid landscape was transformed in January this year by a carpet of wild flowers and grasses, thanks to exceptionally high rainfall in December - there was more rain that month than during 2005, 2006 and 2007 combined!
