This month...

  • Slovenia is an adventure sports paradise, so if you want to get in and around all those wild hills, head to Pro Montana to pick up any gear you need (Poljanski Nasip. Tel. 01 280 0590).
  • The biggest event on Ljubljana's vibrant cultural calender kicks off this month. Talents from as far afield as Russia and the UK join local performers for the 57th annual Ljubljana Festival (from 6 July. www.ljubljanafestival.si).
  • Be lazy and take the modern funicular up or break a sweat and hike up the slope to Ljubljana's cute castle. Enjoy the sweeping views and museum exhibits.
  • Locals insist that Maribor is only the second city in size and much prefer their stately city on the Drava River, with its pavement cafés and lively student fuelled nightlife.

Tips

  • Ljubljana is the only city in the world outside France that still sports a statue of the famous emperor, a legacy of the days when he made the city capital of his Illyrian Provinces.
