This month...

top
  • Whether you're looking for a gift or to keep up with the very latest in designer gadgets, accessories and bags, funky little boutique Blush is well worth a look (7 Rue de Sèze, 6th).
  • Blur, Tracy Chapman, Anthony and the Johnsons, these are just some of the acts that make one of France's best-known summer festivals rock this month in the city's Roman ruins (www.nuitsdefourviere.fr, French only).
  • The relative quiet of the city this month makes moving around it easy. Take advantage and explore the lesser-known quarters such as the village-like Croix Rousse district (4th), perched on the hill overlooking both rivers or head over the Saône River to Vaise (9th), where boutiques and markets mingle with fantastic eateries catering for all tastes and budgets.
  • If the heat is getting to you then head for a bowl of fresh air at altitude. In the north you'll find the hillsides of Beaujolais (30 minutes away), to the east are the Alps and the quaint town of Chambery (60 minutes), and south to the Vercours with neighbouring Drôme towns of Valence and Roman (90 minutes).
