    (11 Plaça des Pins, Ciutadella. Tel. 971 380 469)
Take refuge from the summer sun under the shade of pine trees. This café serves good coffees, sandwiches and, as its name suggests, ice creams.

(Centro Comercial Coves Noves, Es Mercadal. Tel. 971 358 169)
There's plenty to choose from, what with pizzas, fresh fish and choice cuts of meat. Set in a pedestrianised zone, this is great for families as children can play while parents finish their meal in peace.

    (Carretera Cala en Porter 8km. Tel. 971 377 294)
A delight for carnivores - your choice of meat can be flame-grilled to perfection and you can even cast an eye on the barbecue to make sure. Opt for a seat on the terrace, with extensive views over unspoilt Menorcan countryside.

    (334 Moll de Llevant. Tel. 971 362 390)
With a client list including Spain's royal family and ex-prime ministers, it's not just what's on the menu that makes Jágaro popular, it's also who's at the table next to you. Excellent for seafood.

(Centro Comercial Diversitti, 24 Francesc Femenias. )
Recently opened, but already a favoured spot with locals, help yourself to tapas at the bar, and count the cocktail sticks to work out the bill.

    (Carrer del Seminari, Ciutadella. )
Enjoy chamber music under the stars. The cool gardens of Ciutadella's cloisters make for a soothing (and sweet smelling) setting for listening to fine classical and not-so-classical tunes (www.jjmmciutadella.com).

    (Son Bou. )
A packed dance floor, music too loud to chat over, and a ready supply of cocktails - all you need for a great night out. Mojitos' Cuban-themed interior adds character.

  • Buy unique handmade jewellery, distinctive painted leather handbags and other original accessories at Nadia Rabosio (9 Hannover. Tel. 971 363 491).
  • Listen to some fine classical music in spectacular venues, as part of Mahon's annual Music Festival. Acts include opera, organs and tango classics. See posters for details (15, 22 & 29 July. www.menorcaweb.net/jmdemao/festival/2009, Spanish only).
  • Watch the sun go down at Pont d'en Gil. Better known as a spot for divers, the view's not bad from the clifftop either. At the end of the day, you're bound to coincide with locals picking wild capers.
  • Have some fun amid Binibèquer Vell's maze of narrow passages and pathways. This fishing village, recreated by architect Francisco Juan Barba Corsini in 1966, is filled with petite apartments that tier over each other in order to steal a sea view.

Tips

  • King's Island, in Mahon's port, was nicknamed Bloody Island by the English because of the naval hospital built here in 1711.
