This month...

top
  • Take your pick from a huge selection of picnic and barbecue gear at Munich's wonderful kitchen store, Kustermann (8 Viktualienmarkt).
  • July is a fantastic month for classical music lovers, with open-air concerts in some of the city's most atmospheric locations. Among the highlights are soprano Anna Netrebko performing in Königsplatz (10 July) and Odeonsplatz hosting a classical weekend (11-12).
  • There are few more summery things to do than take a picnic to one of the world's largest inner-city parks, the Englischer Garten. Hire a boat on the lake, visit one of several beer gardens, and listen to the live oompah bands that play regularly.
  • For stunning views, but a relatively easy alpine hike, head to Bad Wiessee on Lake Tegernsee, a short drive south of Munich. Start from the Hotel Am Sonnenbichl (www.amsonnenbichl.de) and follow footpath signs to the Fockenstein mountain.

Tips

top
  • Ever wondered why you rarely suffer a headache after drinking Munich beer? Thanks to a law passed in 1516 - the Reinheitsgebot - Bavarian beer contains only four ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast. As a result, it is free from chemicals.
