Airport Information

  • Buses depart from near the airport entrance. Tickets: from £1.90.

  • Visit the Europcar desk on arrival for special easyJet inflight rates.

  • The fare is about £18 to the city centre.

  • Metro trains go directly to the city centre. Tickets: £2.70.

  • F1 Racing Gear is the north-east's only supplier of authentic Formula One and motorsport clothing, merchandise and memorabilia. In addition to Ferrari, McLaren, BMW Sauber, Honda, Renault and Red Bull, it also caters for rally and MotoGP supporters (1 The Arcade, MetroCentre, Gateshead).
  • A million people are expected to throng the coastline at Seaburn and Roker, in Sunderland, for one of largest free airshows in Europe. The Sunderland International Airshow has featured the Red Arrows among its many aerobatic displays. Expect all sorts of fun in the air and on the ground, including the annual beach assault by the Royal Navy (25-26 July).
  • The seaside town of Tynemouth is a great tourist draw in the summer, with its long stretch of sandy beaches, the historic Priory overlooking the coastline - burial place of three kings - and its annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival, which features street theatre and open-air concerts (11-12 July).
  • Helmsley, on the road from Thirsk to Scarborough, is a picture perfect, typically English village. Alongside its historic streets, it boasts the imposing Helmsley Castle, sacked by Oliver Cromwell, and the magnificent Black Swan Hotel (www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk), once frequented by William Wordsworth and now an award-winning boutique restaurant, hotel and spa.
