This month...

  • I Peccatucci di Mamma Andrea offers all sorts of delectable chocolates, almond sweets and liqueurs, handmade on the premises and elegantly packaged (67 Via Principe di Scordia).
  • Palermo celebrates St Rosalie on its patron saint's day with four days of festivities. A huge float bearing an effigy of the saint on a ship is brought along Corso Vittorio Emanuele in gratitude for her help in bringing an end to the plague in 1624. Spectacular fireworks close the event (10-14 July).
  • Palermo's beach of choice, Mondello, can be impossibly crowded during the summer - forgo it all and choose the less sought-after Addaura instead. While the shoreline is rocky, the peace and quiet is guaranteed.
  • Riserva Dello Zingaro is a protected natural area about 90 minutes west of Palermo. Pure heaven for nature lovers, it is off-limits to cars and offers a plethora of Mediterranean flora and flauna, as well as a crystalline, unpolluted sea.

  • The Quattro Canti (Four Corners) is also known as the Theatre of the Sun, in that on any given time of the day, the sun shines on one of the corners.
