One of the choicest spots in the city centre for a quick bite to eat. Excellent coffee, the-diet-starts-tomorrow brownies and healthy sandwiches.

If there was a heaven for carnivores, this Brazilian restaurant would probably be it. Think meat - and lots of it - on skewers. Quality food and decent prices.

Special occasion or not, you can't beat the ambience at Flambée. If you and your date are so inclined, try the chateaubriand Irish steak on a bed of burning cognac.

    (15 Dusni, Prague 1. )
A minuscule cocktail bar off Parizska that will inspire conversation and relaxation. Prices are not steep and the attitude of the staff is as warm as you would find in your favourite local pub, even if they don't know your name.

  • For a sophisticated souvenir pop into Celetna Crystal and pick up Bohemian crystalware and porcelain. Better pick up some bubble wrap, too, for the journey home (15 Celetna, Prague 1. Tel. 222 324 022).
  • Prague was a vibrant centre of Jewish life prior to World War II - and what better way to investigate its fascinating culture than with a trip to the Spanish Synagogue for a Jewish Mystical Melodies concert? (1, 9 & 15 July.
  • About 700 tonnes of imported sand went into building the riverside beach in the Prague 5 district, perfect for topping up the tan. Find it by the Hořejší Nábřeží embankment, just up from the Anděl metro station (line B).
  • If you want to see a Czech town minus the tourists, take a day trip to stunning Olomouc, two hours away by train. The Republic's fifth largest city boasts all the cobblestoned beauty of the capital with the added bonus that you got there first.

Tips

  • Banksy, Hirst, Emin... they could all learn a thing or two from Prague's very own shock artist David Cerny. When he's not painting tanks pink, or designing rude statues for national treasures, he's infuriating EU officials with ironic depictions of the member states.
