  • If you need a decent book to read you can find a wide range of English-language literature in Feltrinelli International, just a short walk from Piazza della Reppublica (84-8 Via VE Orlando. Tel. 06 482 7878).
  • The Auditorium Parco della Musica holds its annual Luglio Suona Bene festival, featuring a wide variety of music (until 31 July. www.auditorium.com).
  • Pay a visit to the Giardino degli Aranci (Garden of Orange Trees) on Via di Santa Sabina, on the Aventine Hill, in the early evening for some well-earned cool air and the finest sunset in Rome. The orange trees were planted in 1932 to commemorate the first orange tree ever planted in Italy.
  • Sperlonga is a stretch of coast that has some of the most gorgeous beaches in Italy. One of these is just a few kilometres south of Sperlonga town. Stop when you see a sign for the trecento gradini (300 steps), which lead down to the stunning beach.

Tips

  • Given the cosmopolitan nature of ancient Rome, communication was sometimes a real problem. This was also of course the case in the city's many brothels. The solution? Graphic wall panels from which the client could choose how he wanted to be 'pleased'.
