  • The local fish market buzzes just outside the palace walls with all manner of Adriatic Sea treats on colourful show. Ideal for those who are self catering, although there is an informal bar and fancy restaurant on hand, too (5 Obrov).
  • The city comes alive in July as the Split Summer Festival kicks off with all manner of cultural events from local and international performers dotted all around the city (www.splitsko-ljeto.hr).
  • The city's original inhabitants came from Salona, an old Roman town in Split's suburbs. Today its ruins conjure up a vivid picture of life in the days of the Roman Empire.
  • Hvar is one seriously smooth and sexy island - it's said to be the sunniest place in Croatia. Take a ferry over to Hvar Town and join the country's beautiful people and the international cognoscenti in its trendy bars and restaurants.
