Shop
What makes NapoliMania novelty shop so fun is that it caters to locals. You won't get all the jokes—or understand all the slogans in dialect—but you will find the most unique Neapolitan souvenirs (85 Via Monteoliveto. Tel. 081 551 0352).
Insider Tip
The Italian you hear in southern Italy may differ from your guide book's suggested pronunciations. Neapolitans often pronounce the letter 's' next to a consonant as an 'sh,’ for instance, making words like 'aspetta' (wait) sound more like 'ashpetta'.
Key Area
Via Chiaia is a pedestrian shopping street that offers a pleasant break from Naples' wild traffic and offers many cosy cafés where you may sample local treats: rich Neapolitan espresso, gelato, and pastries such as rum-soaked baba or luscious, ricotta-filled sfogliatelle.
This month
The Theatre Augusteo features documentaries from around the world, for Artecinema: International Film Festival of Fine Arts. Entry is free and the movie descriptions are in English and Italian, 5pm-midnight from 16-20 October (Tel. 081 414 306).
